The 80th UNGA (United Nations General Assembly) week in New York will bring people throughout the world together from September 22 to September 30. High-level government and civil society representatives gather throughout the city every September to work together to address the most pressing problems affecting society worldwide. There is more excitement this year because it is the UN’s 80th session, which is a significant milestone. Thus, there will be opportunities for introspection about the UN, as well as to establish actions for future work. In 80 years, the UN has been able to contribute in many ways, from the prevention of conflicts to humanitarian works to human rights and development and more, including the eradication of smallpox and supporting humanitarian operations.

The agenda for this year’s UNGA80 is focused on global challenges, including how to reform the UN to be more efficient and accountable; how to accelerate progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); addressing the escalating climate crisis with a special Climate Summit from the Secretary General on the “triple planetary crisis,” etc.Health and mental health issues will be discussed, alongside tackling non-communicable diseases and advancing the goal of universal health coverage. Gender equality and women’s empowerment will be emphasized, as will youth engagement in both the process and outcomes, along with the responsible governance of Artificial Intelligence under the Global Digital Compact.Peace and security issues, as always, will have a prominent place in the agenda, including but not limited to Ukraine, the Middle East, Haiti, and other conflicts. Finally, a Capital for Development Summit will address important economic issues, including global financial system reform by financing climate action, financing development, and a resilient global economy.

Aside from more traditional debates, the UN is encouraging more global public participation of youth, proponents, and audiences around the world through storytelling and online sharing. The UN invites people from all backgrounds to see the events that day, share their impressions, and engage in a conversation using #UNGA. So UNGA 80 is positioned not merely as diplomatic discussions among government representatives, but more as a time for global reflection: looking back over 80 years of UN work, assessing global crises today, and possibly re-establishing commitment for peace, sustainability, and human rights.
